I joined the Air Force as a way to getting out of Harlem when I was 19 and I was immediately shipped to California. I was determined to turn my life around. In California, I took classes at local colleges on nutrition, biology, chemistry and anything else that might have the slightest relationship to how the human body worked. In the late seventies,
I had the opportunity to visit a doctor of eastern medicine for a medical problem. This unique form of medicine, which combined the deep traditions of the east and ancient herbal medicine woven together with the energy of the earth and the spiritual fervor of practitioner, impressed me so profoundly I soon made a decision to commit to learn this ancient medicine. Consequently, I applied and was accepted at SAMRA University of Health Science. I graduated in 1982 with a BA in human health sciences and a certificate of proficiency in acupuncture.
I took the California and national medical boards in acupuncture and herbal medicine and became licensed. I started my practice in Santa Monica California. A year later, I enrolled in a graduate program at SAMRA University and graduated in 1987 with an O.M.D. (doctor of Oriental Medicine,) and a Ph.D. in Oriental medical philosophy. I went on to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine for several years.

I realized there was a void for me in not using benefits of western nutrition in my practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I decided to
incorporate western nutrition into my eastern practice. In the nineties, I went on to study
homeopathic medicine,
hypnotherapy and
NLP (
neuro linguist programming) a method for creating change of habits, behavior, removing phobias etc.
My practice became extremely busy using these various modalities and I felt at the time with some degree of arrogance, I might admit, that I had enough knowledge to practice natural medicine very well. As time passed, I began to feel that western medicine and its advances in science and technology could add to my eastern traditional medical practice. It could also add to my ability to diagnose, treat and verify some of my findings. I had to back off my “holistic high horse” and admit to myself that some aspects of western medicine could be valuable.
I knew practicing strict western medicine was out of the question for me because of the many pitfalls I find inherent in this approach. However, I also felt there was another level I had to go to in order to feel I was doing everything possible to help my patients. I had to let go of my arrogance about the strict holistic approach if I wanted to have the ability to verify my findings in a universally accepted way. This meant integrating the east and the west.

I discovered something called Functional Medicine. This medicine uses many traditionally western testing technique e.g. blood tests, saliva and urine tests but in a holistic way. It also uses some western techniques of treatment but in a holistic way. Functional Medicine does not discard the non-traditional approaches to treatment such as acupuncture, homeopathy, hypnosis, or botanical medicine but holistically incorporates and embraces many eastern and western technologies and sciences into a well-rounded medical system, which is effective and verifiable. I believe for example, this medicine looks at neuro chemical (brain or nervous system) functioning through western eyes with the wisdom of ancient eastern medicine.

The challenge I faced in using Functional medicine was the intense volume of study involved in learning and practicing this approach. Some six or seven years ago, I committed myself to learn Functional medicine and have not stopped leaning since. It is now deeply integrated into my practice. It has been a challenging but wonderful journey into yet another avenue to help relieve human pain and suffering while creating an enhanced the life experience for my patients.
2. Do you believe dietary supplementation can play a role in longevity?
Answer:
ABOSOLUTELY!
I believe the human system by design could function well upwards of 100, 120 EVEN 140 YEARS. There is a volume of documented evidence to support this. In today’s world however, I believe nutritional supplementation is no longer an option but a NECESSITY.

The human system is so over loaded with LIFE DRAINING EXPOSURES because of polluted and unnaturally altered food, toxic air, electromagnetic exposure, toxic metal exposure; inappropriate use of antibiotics and other pharmaceutical medications, harmful chemical additives, preservatives and dies, the use of synthetic hormones and unnatural foods for our livestock and humans, the stress of our current competitive society, our poor diet choices and much more.
It would take many pages to explain the TYPES OF DAMAGE this imposes on all the delicately balanced human systems. Our systems are working overtime trying to keep up with its biological needs in order to function normally. The fact is most of are not. New and frightening diseases are turning up everywhere. The human immune and other systems are crumbling under the weight of the many negative forces it faces. It is difficult to avoid many of these negative forces.

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTATION
MAY BE A WAY TO COUNTERACT
SOME OF THESE FORCES
DIETARY OR NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS not only help maintain the system but when taken CORRECTLY and if possible UNDER PROPER SUPERVISION of a health care provider who will do the appropriate blood, saliva and other tests to assess your condition, can often reverse much of the damage caused by these exposures. This in turn can play a powerful role in giving us a longer and healthier life.
I will have to add though; not all supplements are created equally and not all supplements should be taken by everyone. It is also important to research the company and the manufacturing practices of these companies that promote or sell the supplements so you have some idea of the QUALITY and SAFETY of the products.
Find out where they get their raw materials. Find out how they process the nutrients and what kind fillers if any they use. Learn about their quality control.
THESE SUBSTANCES ARE GOING INTO YOUR BODY
SO IT IS WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT
Another level of looking at dietary supplements is the need to have some idea of what nutrients may be BEST SIUTED FOR YOU. As I mentioned earlier, depending on your biochemistry, genetics, life style, etc. some nutrients may not be appropriate for you while others may be exactly what you need.
Among the many diagnostic tools I use I also do comprehensive blood chemistry and other panels for my patients to determine where they may have deficiencies or imbalances from biological, physiological and neurological points of view. I want to know if their complaints are related to a simple DIETARY DEFICIENCY or is it a MUCH DEEPTER PROBLEM that may require a drastic change in diet, supplementation, life style or treatment. Quite often, I find the beginnings of problems that the patient is not yet aware.
CONSEQUENTLY, PROPERLY GUIDED
DIETARY SUPPLEMENTATION
IS VERY IMPORTANT
This can have a profound positive impact on our health however; this is among many other things that we must incorporate into our lives that will contribute to gaining and maintaining good health and longevity.
3. When we first met, we were talking about the top five foods that have allergenic effects in people. Can you list them and tell us how you suggest people determine which affect them?
Answer:
This is not an easy question to answer in the broader sense. The reason I say this is because of the UNIQUENESS within each human being. But first let me give you the five foods that I have seen present as allergen in most patients.
They are:
- CASEIN (the protein in dairy),
- GLUTEN (the protein in wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, kamut, couscous, amaranth, teff and quinos),
- SOY,
- ALBUMIN (egg protein) and
- PEANUTS.
Because of this UNIQUENESS IN HUMAN BEINGS, the allergic symptoms can be expressed quite differently as can who is allergic to what. We as practitioners should, I believe pay close attention to how this might manifest in individuals. Two individuals could present with identical allergic symptoms but could have very different causes. Conversely, two individuals could present with very different symptoms, the cause could be identical.

ROBBY ROBINSON in Gold's gym Venice, CA and nutrition &

What does this have to do with ALLERGIC FOODS?
While we are all human and biologically pretty similar, there are minor differences that could lead to major problems. Some of these differences are genetic, some are environmental but most I believe are life style.
In health care today, we are seeing an explosion in AUTOIMMUNE DESEASE. An autoimmune disease is manifested in someone when the body begins to attack its own tissue. Examples of this are rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Hoshimoto’s disease (a thyroid autoimmune condition) or MS.
To give you a relatively short answer, the immune system is on constant alert for foreign material (ANTIGENS) that may break through the bodies protective barrier system (skin, mucus membranes, blood brain barrier etc.) and enter the body’s blood stream. When an antigen (which could be an allergic food) is found by the immune system, the immune system sends out a signal that will cause antigen killing cells to circulate that will seek out and attempt to destroy these foreign substances to protect to body.

AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER

As I mentioned in question 2, we all have an incredible amount of toxic exposure including allergic foods. This has put our immune system on almost constant high alert causing it to be highly sensitive to the slightest irregularity. For example if you eat wheat, dairy, or soy every day the biochemical pathways to breakdown and digest these substances may weaken allowing some undigested particles to enter your blood stream. Since they are not broken down to their usable constituents, your immune system recognizes them as foreign particles (antigens) and an alert is set off to destroy these antigens in order to protect the body. This alert can be perceived as an allergic symptom e.g. headache, mental fogginess, weakness or fatigue, joint pain and stiffness, GI disturbances, inability to recover from illness, injury or exercise, lack of motivation etc.

When this happens repeatedly, your immune system becomes so sensitive it begins to destroy what ever it comes in contact with even your healthy tissue hence an auto immune response. In order to determine if one has an autoimmune problem and what they might be allergic to I suggest a simple blood or saliva test. I use these tests routinely to help determine potential allergic and autoimmune problems.
4. As a retired professional bodybuilder, I'm using a combination of 12 different dietary supplements that are considered the building blocks of the body and mind. I have achieved amazing results. I'm interested in learning what 12 or so supplements you would add to a sound eating and training program
Answer:
This is a very provocative question. You see while we are similar biologically, we all have a lifetime of different types of experience and exposure to toxins as well as to wholesome natural foods, environments etc. I would suggest having a COMPREHENSIVE BLOOD CHEMISTRY ANALYSIS to assess your individual needs.

If you supplement your diet without a blood test analysis, a good plant based multiple vitamin and mineral may be OK. However, this may not be the best thing for an individual. For example if an individual has an undiagnosed autoimmune problem, or a particular deficiency, it could be exacerbated by certain synthesized nutrients in a multivitamin.
Generally, this would not happen with a whole food supplement because of the natural concentrations of the nutrients. In addition to a well-rounded diet of fruits, vegetables, proteins, carbohydrates and fats, I would suggest a whole food extract supplement such as GREEN MAGMA or a NATURAL WHOLE FOOD HERBAL SUPPLEMENT. I prefer this to a multi vitamin and mineral (except for special needs, e.g. illness, athletes etc.) because not only will it contain some of the micronutrients and unknown nutrients that are in the whole food but also it will not cause reactions because of high concentrations of isolated synthesized nutrients.
There are a few nutrients and enzymes I would consider CORE to one’s NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTATION PROGRAM given the exposure to toxins and stress of the modern day. These are:
- broad-spectrum plant digestive enzyme,
- daily probiotic (acidophilus),
- Co Q 10,
- glutathione (the premiere antioxidant),
- vitamin C,
- vitamin D (especially for women),
- essential fatty acids (especially omega 3’s),
- glutamine (especially for athletes and people with challenging illness),
- L – carnitine,
- phosphatidylserine (especially for athletes),
- vitamin E (not for those with high blood pressure),
- superoxide dismutase (SOD) and L tyrosine.
This is a general recommendation that may obviate some special needs. In the final analysis, I will say that SUPPLEMENTATION OF SOME SORT IS FAR BETTER THAN NONE .

SUPPLEMENTING YOUR DIET IS A MUST
IN TODAY'S SOCIETY !
Some GENERAL GUIDELINES are important.
- If you are pregnant or faced with a challenging illness, CONSULT your health care practitioner before any supplementation.
- Try not to eat the same foods every day because of the possibility of developing INTOLERANCE to that food and creating an allergic response.
- Drink about 8 GLASSES of water daily, more if very physically active unless you have a prohibitive kidney disorder.
- This is important: AVOID EXESS AMOUNT OF SUGAR OF ALL TYPES (I do not recommend drinking fruit juice because of the high concentration of fructose (fruit sugar)).
- If you have a NEGATIVE REACTION to a food or supplement, avoid the substance and seek a professional’s assistance to discover why.
- Your MENTAL OR EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCE may be due to your physical imbalance so find someone who can help you look at the WHOLE PICTURE..
- EXERCISE regularly to help keep this wonderful human machine running well.
- Strive for PEACE OF MIND because all the good health and physical strength in the world will not matter much if your mind is not at peace.
